In summer 2024, the University established the Office of Institutional Equity. The Office will serve as a centralized resource for addressing all reports of discrimination and discriminatory harassment, including reports that involve alleged violations of Title VI and Title VII, reports that involve alleged violations of Title IX and the University’s Gender Based Misconduct Policy, as well as reports that relate to violations of the Protection of Minors Policy. The Office is responsible for reviewing, investigating and managing all incidents from inception through resolution whether the Respondent is a student, faculty, staff member or affiliate.

Overview of OIE Response Process

Report

All Columbia University community members who experience or witness prohibited conduct are strongly encouraged to report it.

All Columbia University employees have a Duty to Report any instance or allegation of prohibited conduct - discrimination, harassment, retaliation or gender-based misconduct - that involves any undergraduate or any graduate student. Learn more here.

Review

Upon receipt, the OIE team will review your concern and determine the appropriate university office to help facilitate potential resolutions.

Acknowledge

OIE will communicate with the reporter to confirm the report has been received and is under review. After the report is reviewed, the appropriate office will proceed to contact the Complainant, or in some cases, the reporting individual, as soon as possible.

Support

During the review, appropriate and available resources will also be provided.

Resolve

A member of the university office assigned to address your concern will reach out to discuss resolution options. Depending on the type and severity of your concern, this process may work on varying timelines.

Track

OIE will track and monitor all reporting to identify trends and areas requiring the university’s attention. OIE will publish an annual report.
